The River Kennet is one of only 200 chalk streams left in the world, and is the perfect habitat for species including water voles, water crowfoot, river lamprey and brown trout.

We supply water to 30,000 homes in Swindon from our borehole sources - water which would otherwise go straight into the River Kennet. This is putting pressure on the river's ability to cope with periods of low rainfall and changes to weather patterns. So it is essential we work together to reduce the town's reliance on the river.

What we're doing to help

We aim to help Swindon reduce its water use by one million litres per day by 2014 – that's the equivalent of 146 Olympic-sized swimming pools! To achieve this we are offering everyone in Swindon a free pack of water-saving gadgets. All the items in the kit are designed to be easy to fit yourself but we can arrange for one of our professional installers to come and fit everything for you (also free of charge) if you’d prefer.

We are also carrying out research across Swindon to find out how we can have the most impact in reducing water use, and working with schools and businesses, offering water efficiency training and guidance. In Save Water Swindon's first year, the town reduced its overall water-use by 130,000 litres a day. We aim to more than double this over the second year, reducing water use by 300,000 litres a day.
