The project
So far, we have replaced over 900 miles of old and leaky water mains in London.
On any given week, we are working in over 500 streets in the capital and by 2010, we will have replaced over 1,300 miles of Victorian mains.About 1,400 staff are currently working to remove cast iron pipes which in many cases date from Victorian times.
These cast iron pipes are being replaced with more durable and flexible plastic pipes.
In the areas where pipework needs to be replaced, we undertake detailed investigations using state-of-the-art computer modelling to find the best way of renewing the pipe network.
Where possible, we minimise disruption by using technology that avoids the need for long trenches.
Within a typical works area we:
- Install a new network made of polyethylene mains to replace pipes in sizes of 150mm diameter and below which provides optimum flexibility.
- Install a new communication pipe, boundary box and domestic water meter for every building.
- Replace water mains in sizes larger than 150mm in diameter.
