If your metered bill seems unusually high, the points below may help you to work out why:

  • Was your previous bill based on an estimated reading? If your previous estimate was too low, your current bill may include additional costs from previous bills.
  • Does your current bill cover a longer period of time than your previous bill?
  • Have more people moved into your property, or have you had visitors staying?
  • Have you had any water-related problems, such as a dripping tap or washing machine flood? A dripping tap can waste as much as 140 litres a week.
  • Have you done any building, renovation, or decorating since your previous bill, that could mean you have used more water that normal?
  • Have you used your washing machine more often recently?
  • Have you been using a hosepipe or sprinkler? Using a hosepipe for just one hour uses as much water as the average person uses in three days (one day average usage = 155 litres).
  • Could you have a leaking pipe at your property?

You can also use view our charges table and water usage calculator to find out if you are a low, average or high water user.
