Your water and wastewater charges are based on the amount of water you use, plus a fixed charge based on the size of your meter.
When we install your meter, we will fit one that matches the size of your water pipe.
Over time the amount of water you use at your premises may increase or decrease. There could be various reasons, including:
- Change of business activities
- Improved processes requiring more or less water
- Installation of new equipment which uses more or less water
- Introduction of water efficiency measures
If you believe your meter is smaller or larger than needed to supply water at times of heavy use, you could reduce the size of your meter to save money or increase the size to meet your water needs.
How does this apply to my premises?
To find out if your meter is the right size to meet your needs, we can attach a flow monitoring device to it, or to your pipework, to check how much water you use during peak demand.
We will use this information to select a suitable meter for your business.
It is important to have the correct size meter, because if it is too small, it could reduce your water pressure or damage the meter. It could also affect the supply of water to fire fighting equipment such as hydrants, hosepipes or sprinklers.
Fire supplies
We can't downsize your meter if it feeds fire fittings.
Instead we will review your water requirements for general use (excluding fire fighting and testing). With your agreement, you will only pay fixed charges that reflect this use.
Our resizing service
We offer a meter resizing service at a reasonable cost, to save you having to do the work yourself.
Step-by-step guide:
- On receipt of your completed application, we will make an appointment to visit your premises. We will then look at your water supply pipe and fit a flow monitor to the existing meter or pipework.
- We'll come back five to ten days later to remove the flow monitor.
- We'll look at the results and work out what size meter you need before sending you a written quotation for the replacement work.
- If we find that resizing is not appropriate, we will suggest a fixed charge that reflects the amount of water you use.
- If you accept our quotation, we will contact you to arrange an appointment to replace the meter.
- When we have finished the work, we will adjust the fixed charge part of your water bill from the date of the quotation.
How much will the replacement cost?
We charge a non-returnable standard fee for the surveying of each meter and supply, the flow monitoring and quotation.
For the period 1 April 2011 to 31 March 2012 the charge will be £175.00 (+VAT), payable at the time the application is made. Cheques should be made payable to Thames Water Utilities Limited.
The cost of replacing a meter varies, depending on the size of the old and new meters. You will be invoiced for this after we have finished the work
