Built during the Victorian era, London's 'combined' sewerage system, which intakes both rainfall and sewage, was designed to overflow into the River Thames during high rainfall to prevent flooding.

This footage shows a fly-through animation of the proposed London Tideway Tunnels. The Thames Tunnel, a 32 kilometre long tunnel to run under the River Thames from west London, will capture sewage discharges and transfer them to Beckton Sewage Treatment Works in east London.
