Environmental management
Central to the delivery of good environmental performance is a sound management process.
Overall responsibility for environmental performance rests with our Chief Executive Officer, who is supported by a team of environmental experts lead by our Strategy and Regulation Director.
The Environmental Commitment Programme
We operate an environmental management system - 'The Environmental Commitment Programme'. This is based on the international environmental management standard ISO 14001 and for each operation involves:
- Identifying environmental legal and policy requirements
- Identifying significant environmental impacts
- Setting targets to manage these impacts
- Regular audits to ensure performance improvements
- Reviewing the system regularly
In addition to our internal system, some parts of the company have received certification to ISO 14001:
- Engineering division
- Beckton and Crossness Sewage Treatment Works sludge powered generators
- Several of our larger water and wastewater treatment works
Environmental audits
We have developed a Health, Safety and Environmental Audit programme for use across the company. This is based on risk with scoring taking into account new or changing legislation and guidance, safety alerts, incident investigation and previous audit findings. Our audit programme is reviewed and updated quarterly and is externally audited as part of ISO accreditation.
