This page highlights the core training paths offered in the Thames Water apprenticeship scheme and the level of qualifications needed to apply.

Mechanical and Electrical Apprentices

This path offers an opportunity to work with the latest engineering technologies, and focuses on the fields of mechanical, electrical and electronic instrumentation maintenance.

Applicants will have at least four GCSEs at grade C or above, including English and Maths, or obtained a BTEC qualification and have a keen interest in engineering.

The training you receive will depend on the skills you have, but for most people the pattern will be as follows:

Year one

Five days a week at college, four days spent learning workshop skills such as fitting, mechanical maintenance, machining, electronic control, electrical maintenance and installation, plus one day studying engineering theory for a BTEC qualification.

Years two through to four

Four days a week will be spent in the workplace, your own base or any one of the numerous sites throughout our region, and one day a week in college completing BTEC qualification (second year).

Starting salary

£12,500 per annum (includes travel costs to and from college)

Process and Production Apprenticeship

This path is perfect for those who have an interest in science and the environment, with various opportunities on offer at our sewage and water treatment works.

Applicants must have GCSEs at grade C or above in Maths and English, enjoy working outdoors, and be practical and self-motivated. This will give you the chance to learn about water - one of the worlds most valuable assets.

In this three-year apprenticeship you will learn the process, the health and safety and the operation of water treatment or wastewater treatment works leading to NVQ qualifications (operating and distribution processes that produce clean water) whilst studying for a BTEC National Certificate.

Year one

Will be spent at the workplace gaining hands-on experience with one week of the month spent away from the workplace studying for a BTEC National Certificate, where you will start collecting evidence for NVQ level 3.

Years two and three

Will be spent at the workplace gaining hands-on experience and completing NVQ level 3.

Starting salary

£14,000 per annum
