Battersea homes to be protected from sewer flooding

A scheme to alleviate flooding at several homes in the area of St John's Road, Battersea, is underway.

The £3.2million scheme will help protect 36 properties, which have previously suffered from sewer flooding during heavy rainfall.

Work includes expanding a number of existing sewer pipes to provide additional storage and constructing a new sewer system to divert foul water away from the area during heavy rainfall.

Bob Turner, Project Manager for Thames Water, said:

"Sewer flooding is an extremely unpleasant and distressing experience.

"More intense storms resulting from climate change are increasing the need to act quickly to protect homes in the future.

"Unfortunately, as with any works of this nature, some disruption is inevitable, but this scheme will deliver long-term benefits for the local community. We will work as quickly as possible to minimise disruption and traffic diversions will be in place."

The scheme, which is due to be fully completed by June 2009, will be delivered in two distinct areas:

  • Eccles Road to the junction of Lavender Hill
Work to construct a new sewer will take place between October 2008 and May 2009. Parking suspensions will be place.
  • Comyn, Aliwal and Eckstein Roads
Work to replace existing sewer pipes with new, larger pipes, will take place between November 2008 and June 2009. Parking suspensions will be in place.

Thames Water is committed to reducing sewer flooding. In the long-term, the aim is to virtually eliminate flooding resulting from lack of capacity in the sewers. Thames Water hopes to move towards this aim with its largest ever investment programme. These proposals have been submitted as part of the company's Business Plan for 2010 to 2015 to its economic regulator, Ofwat. Thames Water is currently investing £320million on sewer flooding alleviation schemes to help protect 10,000 properties by the end of 2010.
