Kensington and Chelsea homes to be protected from sewer flooding

A £6.1million scheme to help protect more than 100 homes in Kensington and Chelsea from the misery of sewer flooding is under way.

The project will benefit 109 properties in and around Norland Square and Holland Road, which have suffered from flooding during heavy rainfall.

The work includes constructing a new storm water sewer, which will be able to handle excess flows.

Prunella Khalawan, Thames Water's project manager, said:

"The impacts of climate change, population growth and development are putting increasing pressure on the sewer network.

"Residents in Kensington and Chelsea have suffered from the distress of sewer flooding for many years. This scheme will help protect them from flooding and give them peace of mind at times of heavy rainfall.

"As with any work of this nature, disruption is inevitable, but the scheme will have long-term benefits for the community. We will do everything we can to minimise disruption and traffic diversions will be in place."

The scheme is scheduled for completion in Spring 2010.
