As part of our Ten for Ten scheme we are delivering a number of diverse educational and community activities across our entire region so we can bring benefits to as many of our customers as possible.

This section will provide you with information and updates on each of our Ten for Ten schemes as they happen.

Charitable trust

The Thames Water Trust Fund was launched in 2008, to help customers in financial difficulties or hardship.

The Trust Fund is a registered charity and has independent external advisors who review applications and decide on the allocation of funds.

We are donating £5m to the Trust Fund. By March 2010 it had helped over 2,200 disadvantaged customers who were unable to pay their water bill.

Clean up of the Greenway

In partnership with the London Development Agency and London Borough of Newham, we have funded a visioning study to assess possible investment opportunities along the stretch of the Greenway beyond the Olympic boundary - the section from West Ham station to Beckton.

We are now working with partners to seek funding for the improvement projects, and will be investing our own funds to help clean up the Greenway, making it an asset for the whole community to enjoy.

Educational visits at Thames Water sites

We are currently working on detailed plans for the facilities we need to develop at four of our sites to host educational visits.

We plan to start implementing the improvements later this year, with a view to opening the sites for visits next year.

Visitor facilities at Farmoor and Walthamstow reservoirs

We are currently working on detailed plans to scope out the improvements we can make at Farmoor and Walthamstow reservoirs.

We hope to start implementing the improvements later this year. Both sites are currently open for visitors and have various activities for a great day out.

Disabled facilities at Farmoor and Walthamstow reservoirs

We have kick-started improvements to disabled facilities at Farmoor Reservoir by overseeing and helping to fund the development of a wheelchair-friendly pontoon which will enable disabled sailors to independently and safely access their boats.

We are currently working on detailed plans to scope out other improvements we can make for disabled visitors to Farmoor and Walthamstow reservoirs.

We plan to start implementing the improvements later this year.

Water-related attractions

As part of our commitment to improve the educational value of key water-related visitor attractions, we worked with the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust at London Wetland Centre to redevelop their popular pond zone exhibit. The £250,000 project was completed in October 2010 and is now being enjoyed by the centre's 220,000 annual visitors.

We are supporting the Kew Bridge Steam Museum with their strategic goal of becoming London's Museum of Water. Funds have been allocated for a new museum plan and to develop new exhibits.

We are working in partnership with the Crossness Engines Trust to build an access road to the museum. This helps unlock £2.5m of other funding that will be used for the refurbishment of the Grade I listed Crossness Beam Engine House and enhancement of the facility to provide an improved visitor experience.

Key wildlife and recreation sites in the Thames Valley

We have been working with the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust to create a nature reserve beside our Swindon Sewage Treatment Works. They descrive this as the most exciting and unique site they are working on in terms of the range of different habitats. Work has begun on the site and should be completed later this year.

We have assisted the National Trust in developing a plan to improve the natural environment at 'The Chase' near Newbury. Groundworks have started and all the improvements will be complete next year.

We have provided funding for a community project at Goldsworth Park Lake in Woking, are assisting in the planning of Reading's Fobney Island community project and are supporting the Environment Agency with their national Otter Survey.

Bursaries for disadvantaged students

In September 2009 we launched the Thames Water Engineering Bursary, designed to support students from the London Borough of Newham (and surrounding boroughs) study engineering at the University of East London.

In the first year of the scheme, we have supported two students - assisting with their tuition fees and offering them work placements with Thames Water in summer 2010. We will be inviting applications for the Bursary this summer.

Dr Mohommad Dastbaz, Dean of School of Computing, Information Technology and Engineering, said: "In making these generous bursaries available, Thames Water is showing its commitment to investing in our young people for the future. These awards not only recognise the high calibre of our students but also give a great financial boost to our aspiring engineers."

Expansion of London On Tap

Our London On Tap campaign, in partnership with the Mayor of London, has enabled consumers to make a clear choice when they are dining out and request a high-quality, affordable and sustainable alternative to bottled water. It also encourages proprietors to proudly serve tap water to their customers.

In May 2008, the campaign launched a competition to design an iconic water carafe, which will be used to serve water in outlets across the capital.

The winner, 'TapTop' by Neil Barron, was announced by the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, on 1 December 2008.

We have met all the upfront costs of the campaign and have donated over 3,500 carafes to deserving causes. We aim to donate more carafes and install our first two drinking water dispensers in central London this year.
