Alex Jones, The One Show

An appropriately dressed Jason Manford (in full mutant ninja turtle gear) accompanied his One Show co-hosts Alex Jones and Chris Evans to find how who viewers had voted to clear large build ups of fat from our sewers - all in an effort to raise cash for Children in Need. Unfortunately for Alex she received the most votes.

She squealed and screeched and gagged. After our flusher Danny managed to prise her finger's from the edge of the man hole, Alex did get stuck in. She must be commended for the bravery she showed in the face of such a seething mass of foul-smelling fat.

Johnny Vaughan

Capital Radio breakfast host, Johnny Vaughan visited our Fleet sewer beneath Blackfriars Bridge for the History Channel's Mud Men series to tell the story of "The Great Stink" and how the sewers saved London. The Fleet is the largest of London's "lost rivers".

Accompanied by co-presenter and Mudlark Steve Brooker, the pair braved the sewer in very wet conditions, which made their visit all the more daunting. They came along with bags of enthusiasm and had a great laugh from start to finish. If it wasn’t for the high tide chasing them out they could have stayed for hours!

Neil Morrissey

Bob the Builder, aka Neil Morrissey, faced a double-whammy of filth for a celebrity special of ITV1's Grimefighters.

He waded waist-deep in putrid fat in the sewers beneath London's Northumberland Avenue before venturing to our pumping station to clear large build ups wet wipes, loo roll and sanitary products from the screens. But despite all this and with a 'dumper' full of good humour, the inspection was completed and Neil has a better understanding of why we cry 'Bin it - don't block it!'

Radio 1's Scott Mills

BBC Radio 1 DJ Scott Mills waded a mile through our sewers as part of his Sport Relief 'miles from hell'.

Trudging waist-deep through Londoners' waste, it took him 90 minutes to complete his challenge, in some very smelly conditions. Scott put on a very brave face, experiencing first hand some of the unpleasant things people flush down their loos.

Singing sewer flushers

Our very own choir of "flushers", became mini-celebrities during Christmas 2009, after reworking the centuries-old Christmas carol 'God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen', entitling it 'This Christmas Think of Sewermen', in a bid to combat sewer abuse.

This masterful rendition was recorded in the Victorian sewers deep under Wick Lane in east London, attracting attention from national and local media. The carol is a seasonal plea to customers to avoid washing grease from turkey dinners down drains because it cools in the sewers, sets hard and causes horrible blockages.

Dan Snow

Presenter Dan Snow undertook a day's 'work experience' for a BBC2 documentary, working for a day with our sewer flushers. He removed large amounts of fat from the sewer and cleared a large blockage from a filter screen at our sewage treatment works in London.

BBC Newsround

Younger television viewers got the opportunity to take a glimpse inside the murky underworld of London's sewer system on BBC1's Newsround.

Presenter Ricky Boleto braved the sub-zero weather to join our flushers underneath streets near Trafalgar Square, where he saw for himself what happens when customers discard of fat and oil in the sink.

The sewer was clogged with several feet of solid, putrid fat, which was floating on the top of the sewage, which Ricky and the flushers tried to dislodge with a spade.

Blue Peter

Blue Peter presenter Andy Akinwolere experienced for himself the grim reality of large build-ups of fat deep inside the sewers near Embankment in London, which he helped to dislodge with a shovel.

He later visited Beckton Sewage Treatment Works in east London, to follow the journey of waste and view the screening process where unflushable products are collected before wastewater is treated.

Robert Llewellyn

Actor Robert Llewellyn of Red Dwarf fame, ventured underground for a special glimpse inside London's sewer network for Channel Five series 'How do they do it?'.

He joined our flushers beneath Bond Street, to find out more about how they perform their unusual job, and got stuck in by helping to remove fat from the sewer.
