Odour management

In the past Thames Water has not been as successful as it would have liked when it came to controlling odour.

This led to a prosecution by the London Borough of Bexley for odour nuisance caused in 2004.

Since then we have undertaken several measures at  the site to reduce odour including the installation of a sludge dewatering and liming plant at a cost of £4 million.

Crossness is run with an odour management plan, which means that we acknowledge that our site creates odour during normal operations.

Our aim is to treat the waste water efficiently, run our sewage treatment works smoothly, and reduce the impact of odour.

Together with the environmental health officer at London Borough of Bexley we investigate every complaint we receive.

We know we can do better and are investing in work to reduce odour.
