Work is nearing completion at Farmoor Reservoir in Oxfordshire to create a unique floating jetty that will enable disabled sailors to access their boats easily and safely, without the aid of a helper.

With Thames Water's support, the charity Accessible Sailing has been fundraising for the Pontoon Project since 2003.

The project was also televised on ITV1's People's Millions in November 2007, where it went head to head with another local project to win £94,000 of funds following a telephone vote.

Thames Water has since donated an additional £250,000 required to complete the project through its new Ten for Ten scheme, which means the Pontoon will be ready for use in Autumn this year.

David Owens, Thames Water's Chief Executive, said:

"Disabled sailors are currently unable to launch their boats alone. Helpers have to wade into the reservoir to help them from the beach end. The new pontoon will not only enhance the lives of disabled sailors for whom sailing is a passion, providing them with independence and confidence, but will provide a safe harbour area for the less confident sailors.

"This project has really touched the hearts of the local community, who have shown overwhelming generosity to see that the pontoon goes ahead. Thanks to the dedication of volunteers, the Vale of White Horse District Council, Cumnor Parish Council, businesses and schools, and the lottery grant, £250,000 has been raised. We have matched this donation through our Ten for Ten scheme bringing the total to £500,000.

"As well as attracting more disabled sailors to Farmoor, we hope that the reservoir can be promoted as a training facility for the 2012 British Olympic disabled sailing team."

Once completed the pontoon will be 65 metres long and five metres wide allowing for wheelchair access and hoists. There will be a sloping walkway and access bridge linking the shore to the main pontoon. A lift will also be constructed to enable easier access to water level for disabled sailers.
