If you need to report a blockage or flooding, please read the information below to work out who may be responsible.
Public sewer
If you think there is a blockage or if your property has been flooded by our public sewer, please call us on 0845 9200 800 (Textphone: 0845 7200 899) and one of our team will be here to help, 24 hours a day.
We will discuss the problem with you, and may arrange to visit. How quickly we will be able to get to your property will depend on how bad the flooding is, and where it is. This can range from one hour to 24 hours.
Highway flooding
Your local authority maintains the grated, grilled or slatted drains and gullies, and the associated pipework up to the connection to our public sewer. In some areas they also own the surface water sewer.
If the gully in the road is broken or unable to take rainwater away, this may be due to a blockage or insufficient highway drainage.
Rivers and watercourses
If flooding comes from a river, such as during or following heavy rainfall, it may be the responsibility of the riverbank owner.
The Environment Agency may be able to tell you who is responsible for maintaining a particular river or watercourse. Their 24 hour floodline number is 0845 988 1188
We place the highest priority in dealing with cases where there is a risk of pollution from our sewers getting into a river or watercourse. If you see potential or actual pollution, please let us know straight away.
You can call us on 0845 9200 800 (Textphone: 0845 7200 899) and one of our team will be here to help, 24 hours a day.
Groundwater seepage
If your cellar or basement is flooded, this could be caused by water seeping up through the ground after heavy rainfall.
However, if you think that it is caused by a leaking water main or sewer, we can investigate this for you and then tell you who is responsible.

Land drainage
If flooding is caused by water running off the land or where a field is waterlogged, this will need to be dealt with by the landowner.
Your local authority may be able to help you to investigate this problem.
However, if you suspect the water is coming from a damaged water pipe, please call us on 0845 9200 800 (Textphone: 0845 7200 899) so we can investigate.
Our lines are open, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
