Singing Sewermen
The Singing Sewermen, Thames Water's very own choir of "flushers", have reworked the centuries-old Christmas carol 'God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen', entitling it 'This Christmas Think of Sewermen', in a bid to combat sewer abuse.
This masterful rendition was recorded in the Victorian sewers deep under Wick Lane in East London. The carol, part of Thames Water's 'Bin it - don't block it' campaign, is a seasonal plea to customers to avoid washing grease from turkey dinners down drains because it cools in the sewers, sets hard and causes horrible blockages.
An estimated 500 tonnes of fat - the equivalent of almost 1.8m standard blocks of lard - goes down 13.8 million Thames Water customers' drains each December.
