Our staff donated £65,649 through Give as You Earn, Thames Water's payroll giving scheme, which again led to us receiving a 'silver' payroll giving award from the Charities Aid Foundation.
As well as paying administration costs, the company matches ten per cent of donations made by staff – this generated an additional £65,649 for a wide variety of good causes.
In 2009/10 the Charities Committee – made up of senior managers and corporate responsibility staff – supported 11 new projects with a combined value of £28,000.
Our donations have included providing £6,500 for KIDS, a charity working with disabled children and young people, to support their hydrotherapy pool in Hackney.
Among other examples, we have provided £300 for Swindon-based educational charity Inner Flame. The money has funded plastic water bottles for young people taking part in their courses, emphasising the benefits to healthy living of drinking water.
All staff are eligible to request matched funding up to £2,000 from the committee for charities for which they have been raising funds. Employees raised almost £66,786 for good causes, which qualified for £54,483 in matched funding from the Charities Committee.
This included the annual Customer Services pantomime, held in January 2010 at Swindon's Wyvern Theatre, which raised £4,000 for Help the Heroes, Parkinson's Disease and Oxsarc, a research fund looking to cure rare types of cancer.
