Throughout 2009, we continued to meet the high standards we achieved at our 349 sewage treatment works the previous year, with 100 per cent compliance against Water Resources Act (WRA) look up table consents.
However, there were breaches of metals compliance (WRA absolute limit) at two of our works in west Berkshire. Overall, this means that 99.4 per cent of our discharges were compliant against all numeric consents.
This is an increase from the 99.14 per cent compliance reached in 2008, and demonstrates a high level of achievement. We have attained this by continued focus on all aspects of performance at our sewage treatment works.
We have a robust risk management process and comprehensive surveillance programme, which includes sampling and monitoring. This means we can detect and deal with emerging issues at an early stage.
