In the UK, we often take water for granted. When we flush the toilet or turn on the tap we expect a plentiful supply of high quality water. But water is becoming more precious than ever. With our power showers, dishwashers and washing machines, we use much more than we used to.

On average, each person in the Thames Water area uses 160 litres a day, compared to 140 litres in the 1980s. By comparison, in the developing world the average person uses only 20 litres a day.

We can all help to reduce the demands on our water resources by using water more effectively. Saving water often has additional benefits. Why not note down what the added benefits could be and see if they match those outlined in the reasons to save water section.

There are schemes that can support your school to become more sustainable in a number of environmental areas, including water.
