The Thames River Basin is one of the most heavily used water systems in the world.
Although it sometimes feels like the South-east of England receives plenty of rainfall, in fact London receives less rainfall in an average year than cities such as Dallas, Sydney and Rome.
To ensure there is enough water in the future we will all need to use water more wisely.
Key facts
- Our existing water supply is 77 per cent surface water and 23 per cent groundwater.
- Using Environment Agency guidelines, we currently estimate that climate change will reduce the water available water for London by over 100 million litres per day by 2025 (equivalent to the average water used by 625 thousand people per day!), although this figure could change as understanding of climate change develops.
