Thames Gateway Water Treatment Works - An engineering solution

Last reviewed:

To make sure London has enough water during a drought, we've built a new water treatment works in Beckton, east London.

The Thames Gateway Water Treatment Works will, when required, take water from the tidal River Thames and use a process called desalination to remove the salt, producing high-quality drinking water.

This is mainland UK's first desalination plant. It has been designed to be as efficient and sustainable as possible.
