Smart metering

Last reviewed:

We are modernising the way we manage water supplies by fitting water meters at homes across our area.

Smart meters enable you to monitor your usage online 24/7, giving you greater control of your bill. They are the fairest way to pay, as you only pay for what you use. Our metered customers tend to use 12% less water on average. Meters will also help us to find leaks and fix them faster.

Rolling out smart meters

This is a large programme of work and it will take many years to meter all the 3.3 million properties we supply water to. We are focusing on London first, as this is where water resources are most stretched, working borough- by-borough across the capital before starting work in the Thames Valley from 2020.

This was approved by the Government in June 2012. Since then we have been planning the most effective way to roll this out and trialling the latest metering technology.

As we roll metering out, our team will be on hand to help people save water, energy and money.

This includes giving everyone two years before they are moved on to a meter, unless they want to switch early and cash in on the savings. We will provide practical support, including fitting free water-saving devices that can help reduce a home's water use by up to a quarter.

When we start fitting smart meters in your area we will write to you and let you know.

What's a smart meter?

We will be the first in the UK to use "smart" water meters which will be connected to a wireless network, so customers can view their water consumption online around the clock, gaining greater control of their usage and their bill.

Crucially, smart meters will also provide us with a more detailed understanding of where water is being used – and in what quantities – across our network, enhancing our ability to pinpoint and fix leaks.
