April 2009 - Road plating a UK first

Last reviewed:

We became the first UK utility to use high-strength, glass-reinforced plastic road plates to bridge open street excavations in a bid to combat traffic jams.

We are using the plates at our Victorian mains replacement sites on London's 'red routes', the busiest roads in the capital, in a bid to make Londoners' lives easier.

The plates enable motorists to drive straight over our road works during rush-hour - before workmen lift them up and resume their activities when traffic quietens down.

Boris Johnson, Mayor of London, said:

"Thames Water deserves particular praise for leading the way on plating. I hope that other utility companies will follow their example."
