At the forum we will covered our work to examine raw water transfers from the River Severn to the River Thames and the Abstraction Incentive Mechanism, a new regulatory measures to help to manage abstraction from environmentally sensitive water sources. At this forum we covered our proposed approach to forecasting demand for water, including forecasts for population and housing growth, and assessment of environmental and social impacts. The presentation slides and the minutes are available to download.

The 2010-2012 drought exposed potential weaknesses in the existing processes for assessing the impact of climate change on water resources and that perturbing the historic record of rainfall and evaporation may not adequately reflect how the system might respond to multi-year droughts likely to occur under climate change. At this meeting we provided an overview of the work underway to consider stochastic forecasting approaches, and the generation of artificial drought sequences that can be used to test the robustness of the existing system and new supply options to droughts worse than in the historical record. We held a water resources forum on 7 September 2015. At the forum we introduced the work underway to explore decision making tools to help determine the long term water resources strategy for London and the Thames Valley. We also discussed changes to the regulatory framework for water resources planning and provided an update on the work to examine resource options, investigations into the Lower Lee and demand forecasting methods. A water resources forum was held on 11 May 2015 at the Town Hall, Reading. At the forum we provided an update on the work we are doing to assess resource options that could help balance supply and demand. The draft final report on this work and a summary paper are available to download below. The Environment Agency also presented on the priorities of Government and the role of Water Resources in the South-East. The presentation and minutes of the meeting are available to download.

A technical meeting was held on 30 September 2014 to discuss our work to review and assess large water resource options. The briefing paper issued for the meeting has been updated with comments and information discussed at the meeting. This is attached below. The paper covers:

  • the resource options that TW has considered in WRMP14 and potential new options; and
  • the screening methodology undertaken to review options in WRMP14 and proposals to add a further screening process to enable completion of detailed studies in the next 5 years (AMP6).
