Challenge: Managing stormwater in a changing climate

We're facing many challenges that are putting a strain on the city's drainage systems. These challenges include climate change and the increasing loss of permeable green spaces.

Solution: Incentivising SUDS Installation

This project is developing a world-first market-based approach. We're working with utility companies to incentivise installing sustainable drainage systems. This is specifically during street works. The method would be instead of simply replacing the original surface after excavations.

SUDS are designed to mimic natural water processes. They slow the flow of rainwater which reduces flood risk and the impact of pollution.

This innovative framework will:

  • Provide a cost-effective flood mitigation
  • Reduce roadwork disruptions
  • Transform urban spaces into greener, more biodiverse environments
  • Improve the climate resilience of neighbourhoods and streets

Project timeline and collaboration

This £1.34 million project funded by Ofwat involves 16 partners and is due for completion in March 2026. It demonstrates our innovative and collaborative solutions for a more sustainable London.

We're working in partnership with the Greater London Authority and other utility companies. Together, we’re leading the way in delivering more sustainable infrastructure.
