Guildford mains pipeline project

We’re investing £46m in Guildford to help transfer drinking water from Pewley Downs Reservoir into the Netley Mill WTW. Galliford Try will be working on behalf of Thames Water.

The work will start in February 2024 and is set to be completed by December 2025. Our working hours will be 7.30am to 6pm Monday to Friday and 8am to 1pm should we need to work on a weekend.

Benefits to the local community

The project will help to:

  • increase resilience of the water supply in the East Guildford area
  • meet future water demands in the area
  • prevent regular water outages

How this may affect you

The main will follow the northern route from Pewley Reservoir. Landowners’ fields will be excavated to accommodate the new water main. There will also be associated building works at Pewley Reservoir and Netley Mill WTW’s. Construction impacts will also occur in the West Guildford area.

Mitigation will be employed through implementation of a construction, environmental management plan (CEMP). If required, mitigation licences will be obtained from Natural England in accordance with legislative requirements.

Impact to the environment

Through route selection and optimisation, a number of potential impacts to the environment and cultural heritage have already been avoided.

A scheme of biodiversity enhancements will be implemented to ensure biodiversity net gain across the project area, this will include cooperation with Guildford BC on the SANG.
