The New River brings fresh drinking water from Hertfordshire to North London. A 45 km footpath follows the course of the New River, linking the inner city to the open countryside.
For public safety and accessibility, we're improving the integrity of the embankment and path. In order to carry out this essential work, we'll need to close parts of the footpath.
The footpath between Theobalds Lane and the M25 will be closed until the end of February 2026. We'll continue to work demobilising the site until April 2026.
As parts of the footpath will be closed, you'll need to use a different route. Safe alternative walking and cycling routes are shown on the maps.
The construction of around 1,100m of sheet piling will reduce leakage from the New River aqueduct.
