Stoke Newington East Reservoir scheme
We'll carry out essential maintenance on the East Reservoir in Stoke Newington. The work will involve installing an inground, sheet pile wall, and associated drainage. The wall will run for approximately 400 m and, once completed, will be buried beneath ground level.
When and where we'll be working
Our work will start on 6 January 2025 and will continue until February 2026.
We'll be working on the southeastern bank of the reservoir. The main works area will follow the gravel path between The Coal House Café and the northern entrance.
How this may affect you
While we will do all we can to minimise any disruption there will still be some.
- The gravel path between The Coal House Café and the northern entrance will be closed from 6 January 2025 to February 2026
- At times, there will be some heavy vehicle movements required to access the site via Bethune Road
- Work will be visible from different locations around the reservoir and from tall buildings
- There will be some construction noise. We'll track noise levels while carrying out the works
The Coal House Café will remain open as normal during the works. The New River Path will also remain open and unaffected by the works.
What we're doing
Our work will include:
- Construction of a crane pad near the southeastern boundary of the reservoir to lift piles and other machinery
- Removal of a 400 m section of the existing concrete wave wall which forms the southeastern perimeter of the reservoir
- Digging a 400 m trench where the new inground, sheet pile wall will be installed. This will follow the existing gravel path along the top of the reservoir
- Placing a low noise and vibration pile press machine above the trench. This will press (rather than hammer) the piles to the desired depths along the 400 m alignment. This will also reduce noise disruption
- Sealing of all piles in concrete once they're in place
- Re-establishing the walkway over the top of the wall so it's not visible
- Installing inground drainage behind the wall, avoiding the trees' roots on site where possible. The drainage will ensure water does not build up behind the new inground wall
- Reseeding of the reservoir bank after we completed our works
- Reopening the reservoir to the public following the works

Background
The East Reservoir, or Woodberry Wetlands, is covered by the Reservoirs Act 1975. The reservoir undergoes regular, routine inspections to identify when maintenance works are needed.
Our work will ensure the reservoir continues to function as an essential drinking water resource. And it remains an important ecological and community asset.
