Our bulk metering project

A bulk meter is a large meter that we fit to pipes to help us find leaks. They are usually fitted to pipes that supply large blocks of flats and they’re only used to measure water flow and will not affect your bill.

Learn more about switching to a water meter.

If we're installing bulk meters in your area, we’ll contact you to let you know.

Installing the meters

We install meters outside your property, so we can do this work without you needing to stay in. We’ll dig a small hole to fit the meter into the ground. This is usually in the pavement.

We’ll need to turn off your water supply for up to three hours, between 9am and 5pm. We’ll always let you know 48 hours before we do this.

We’ll put up signs if we need to close footpaths or suspend any parking bays.

What do you have to do?

You don’t need to do anything, but you may want to fill a kettle before we turn off your water supply and store a jug of water in the fridge.

If you have a medical condition which means you need a constant supply of water then please tell our team by calling us on 0800 009 3656. We can then give you bottled water.

During our work

While we're working outside fitting the meter, please don’t use any household appliances which use water. This includes your washing machine, dishwasher or shower.

After our work has finished

You may notice that your water splutters out of the cold water tap or might look cloudy. Don’t worry, this is only caused by trapped air.

Sometimes our work can make the water look murky when it first comes out of the tap. This is normal and harmless and will clear quickly if you run the tap for a few minutes.

If you have any problems

If your water doesn't come back on or your pressure is very low, please check with a neighbour to see if they have the same problem.

If your neighbour’s water is back on, check your inside stop valve is fully open (usually located under the kitchen sink).

If your water is still not on, please call us on 0800 009 3656 quoting bulk meters. We are open 24 hours a day for general enquiries.
