Swindon New Eastern Villages pumping station
We’re building a new wastewater pumping station off Merlin Way in Swindon. We're also building two new rising main sewer pipes. This work forms a key part of the drainage strategy for the New Eastern Villages (NEV) development. NEV is located east of the A419.
These upgrades are essential to meet the increased demand from the new development. They'll also help protect the environment and reduce disruptions for our customers.
We are collaborating with Mgroup Water as our delivery partner. The site team will be wearing Thames Water branded PPE.
When and where we'll be working
We're preparing the pumping station site for construction to start in summer 2025. The new rising mains pipes will be installed in sections. We'll use a combination of open-cut and horizontal directional drilling methods.
Our working hours will be 7.30am to 6.30pm Monday to Friday and possibly some weekend work.
The project includes the following key elements:
- Wastewater pumping station off Merlin Way
- Two new rising main sewer pipes:
- Short pipe running from the new pumping station to Merlin Way
-
A longer pipe laid mostly in the cycle path on Covingham Drive and up Dorcan Way. This will connect to an existing manhole in Greenbridge Retail Park.

How this may affect you
There will be the need for some road closures and traffic management for short periods on Merlin Way. This will be during the short rising main installation only. Timings for this are still to be confirmed.
We'll also need to close the cycle path along Covingham Drive to install the long rising main.
Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times for homes and businesses. Emergency service access won't be affected.
There may be some increased noise and vehicle movements during working hours.
Our teams may turn up to site earlier to attend safety talks and briefings on the work they're carrying out.
We’ll do all we can to reduce disruption while we work. But we understand your business may sometimes be affected. Learn more about our business loss of profits policy.
