Across the Thames Water area

Helping us help you……

Record-breaking heat across London and the South East:

Last month's exceptional heatwave saw the Met Office confirm that we have experienced the hottest May on record with 35.1°C recorded at Kew Gardens in London exceeding the previous record by 2°C.

Heatwave conditions drive demand across the Thames Water area and we’ve seen demand for water increase by up to 50% in some areas. This kind of weather leads to rapid spikes in water use, particularly for outdoor activities like watering gardens, filling paddling pools and using hoses and sprinklers.

Working hard to keep your water flowing:

We work hard in extreme weather condition to keep your water flowing. Our teams are fixing hundreds of leaks every week, monitoring the network 24/7 and moving water around the system to maintain supplies. Hot, dry ground can cause pipes to shift and crack, so this kind of weather increases the likelihood of new leaks appearing.

We’re asking you to help us keep the water flowing at your taps. Small steps like these can make a big impact…..

Things you can do to help:

  • Swap hoses or sprinklers for a watering can
  • Avoid watering gardens during the day and let lawns go golden - they recover fast!
  • Reuse water where possible, such as padding pool water for plants
  • Fill paddling pools once and reuse rather than refilling
  • Delay activities like car washing or use a bucket instead of a hose

When the weather cools and we get some rain, we still need to be water wise. The longer term forecast is for a warmer summer this year and we are busy preparing for that fact. Small changes across millions of homes can significantly reduce pressure on supplies during hot weather.
