Continuous water quality monitoring (CWQM)
As part of the Environment Act 2021, we're installing continuous water quality monitors in rivers. The monitors will be placed both upstream and downstream of our discharge points. This will help us understand the impact of our infrastructure on river water quality. We aim for 25% of discharges to be monitored by April 2030. The monitors will collect data continuously, taking readings every hour. We'll share this river quality data in near real-time with the public by April 2030.
This data will help:
- us understand how our wastewater infrastructure affects river health
- the Environment Agency and public to have more visibility of discharges and what impact they have
- us understand how other sectors, such as agriculture or highways, affect water quality too
