Isle of Dogs trunk mains project
We're investing in our region by replacing trunk mains at Isle of Dogs. The new mains will help provide a more reliable drinking water supply. It will also help to reduce leaks and bursts and increase water carried in the mains.
We'll be working in phases from August 2024 through to 2026. Phase One begins on 12 August 2024. As work progresses, we'll update you with details of later phases.

How this may affect you
Traffic management will be in place, so please look out for our on-street and path signage. Temporary traffic signals will be in place on Burdett Road. We will need to temporarily suspend the following:
- Eric Street bus stop towards Canary Wharf
- St Paul’s Way Bus Stop towards Bethnal Green/Hackney
- Mile End bus stops A & B
Several parking bays on Burdett Road will be temporarily suspended. Please see on-street signage for details. You can view utility works, amended bus routes, and plan your journey online.
We’ll always do our best to minimise disruption to you. If access to your property or your water supply is affected, we'll let you know in advance. Pedestrians, emergency vehicles and bin collections will have full access to roads.
Our working hours will be Monday to Friday 7am to 7pm and Saturday 7am to 1pm. And although our team will be on site from 7am, we will not start work until 8am. This allows the team to have an hour to set up the site safely and an hour to pack up. If you feel your business has been affected, view our business loss of profits policy.
Techniques we'll use
We’ll use different methods to complete the project, such as:
Sliplining
We’ll insert new pipeline through the existing Victoria Main to reduce disruption.
CCTV survey
Post installation surveys to confirm alignment with specifications.
Open-cut method
Only where necessary, we’ll excavate ground to install new pipework.
