Newbury Road mains replacement

We’re upgrading ageing water pipes along Newbury Road between Eastbury and East Garston (West Berkshire).

This work is part of our long-term plan to enhance the water network. Our goal is to provide a more reliable service for local homes and businesses.

The current pipes often leak and burst. Replacing them with modern materials will reduce disruptions and strengthen the local water supply.

When and where we're working

Works start 6 July 2026 and are expected to last until March 2027.

The program will be delivered in phases. It will move along the route in sections instead of working everywhere at once. This approach minimises disruption and keeps impacts temporary.

Working hours

Our usual working hours will be:

  • Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm
  • Saturday, 8am to 1pm (where required)

We aim to carry out noisier work during daytime hours wherever possible. Occasionally, we may need to work outside these hours to manage traffic safely or reduce disruption. If this happens, we’ll let you know in advance.

Planned phases of work

*All timings are indicative and may change as the programme progresses. We'll provide more information for phases 2 and 3 closer to the time work starts.

Phase 1

Newbury Road / Hillside (East Garston)

Early July 2026 to late October 2026

  • Newbury Road junction of Front Street to entrance of Queens Arms Pub - early July to early August*
  • Queens Arms Pub entrance to junction of Roger’s Lane - early to late August*
  • Junction of Roger's Lane to Eastbury - late August to late October*

Phase 2

Bockhampton to Eastbury section

Late October 2026 to early December 2026*

Works progress between Bockhampton and Eastbury

Phase 3

Eastbury and River Lambourn crossing

From early December 2026 to March 2027*

Works continue through Eastbury, including the River Lambourn crossing section

The following maps show the section splits for road closures during phase 1.

How this may affect you

We’ll do everything we can to minimise disruption, but while we carry out this work you may notice:

  • Temporary road closures along sections of Newbury Road
  • Signed diversion routes in place
  • Temporary restrictions to driveways or access
  • Increased activity from construction vehicles and equipment
  • Some noise from construction works

Since the work happens in phases, disruption will be temporary and local. It will move along the route as the work continues.

Traffic management and access

To carry out the work safely, we’ll use rolling road closures (around 100m at a time). This means only short sections of the road will be closed at any one time, and closures will move along the route as work progresses.

Diversion routes will be via:

  • A338 (Hungerford Hill)
  • B4000 (Ermin Street)

Pedestrian access will always be maintained. Access to homes and businesses will also be maintained wherever reasonably practicable. If temporary restrictions are required, we’ll contact affected customers in advance.

Keeping you updated

We’ll keep customers informed throughout the works by:

  • Writing to properties ahead of works starting and before each phase change
  • Providing updates where timings or access arrangements change
  • Maintaining this webpage with the latest information
