Assessing performance

We use Performance Indicators in the DWMP as measures to describe how the drainage and wastewater systems can meet their legal obligations now, and in the future.

Performance Indicators are measures of risk across the system. The DWMP aims to reduce these risks through investments and management responses that address pressures from:

  • Climate change
  • Population growth
  • Ageing infrastructure
  • Changing environmental requirements

Types of Performance Indicators

There is one set of standard Performance Indicators common to all water companies in England and Wales. Given to us by our regulator, they cover the issues important to customers and communities as well as critical legal obligations. These include:

  • Flooding
  • Environmental permit compliance
  • Storm overflows
  • River water quality
  • Public health issues
  • Pollution incidents

If required, companies can introduce bespoke Performance Indicators to help address local concerns or investment needs.

Where the methods or data necessary to evaluate Performance Indicators are not mature, the Performance Indicators are identified as being ‘emerging indicators’. Approaches taken may differ between water companies.
