Upgrading Chesham

We know we need to do a lot more to protect our much-loved rivers. Over the next two years, we’re investing more than £16 million in upgrading Chesham sewage treatment works. It's part of a £1.6 billion investment to improve our sewage treatment works and sewer networks.

The different stages

Phase 1: upgrading and increasing the size of the assets, so the site can hold an additional 112 litres of wastewater a second before overflowing to storm tanks. This increased capacity means that we can now treat larger volumes of wastewater to stop it entering our rivers.

Phase 2: an increased focus on enhancing the biodiversity in the 18km River Chess.

How the upgrade will help

  • Enhance river environment and community health
  • Biodiversity thrive in an area of outstanding natural beauty
  • People enjoy more recreational activities in our rivers, such as wild swimming and paddle boarding
